You’re Already Talking to AI. Here’s How to Make It Work for You

The other evening, it was thundering and lightning outside. My daughter and I were eating dinner, and she asked, “Where does thunder come from?”So I did what a lot of us do, I asked the Google smart speaker in the room.

It gave us a very official-sounding answer. And by “official,” I mean... confusing. It technically answered the question, but it didn’t land... not for her, and honestly, not for me either.

We both looked at each other with the same puzzled face. A giggle followed. Then I grabbed my phone and asked ChatGPT the same question, but this time, I asked it to explain it like I was talking to a 3-year-old.

This time, the response was calm, warm, and simple. Something like:

“Thunder is the sound the sky makes when big clouds bump into each other. It’s a big boom that tells us a storm is here.”

Suddenly, we both got it. And it got me thinking, what’s the difference between the tech we already use every day (like Siri or Alexa) and tools like ChatGPT?

Because most moms I know use smart home assistants without thinking twice. But many haven’t tried large language models and they might be missing out on something that actually makes everyday life a little easier.

It’s Not One vs. the Other

It’s not that one device is better than the other. In fact, the lines between them are starting to blur. Smart home assistants are beginning to integrate LLMs (Large Language Models) under the hood.

But the real difference? One is designed for tasks. The other is built for thinking.

Most Moms Are Already Using AI… But Not Like This

If you're using Alexa or Siri or Google to check the weather, set a timer, or play the Wicked soundtrack on repeat you're already using AI.

But you're probably not using a large language model the way it’s designed to shine.

LLMs like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini can:

  • Explain hard things in soft ways

  • Help you find words when you don’t know what to say

  • Plan, write, and revise with you

  • Give emotional insight, gentle language, even parenting scripts

  • And yes… actually make your life easier

Let’s break it down in a mom-friendly way.

Situation

Smart Assistant Response

LLM Response

“What’s the weather today?”

“67 and cloudy.”

Also: “Want me to help plan indoor activities with your toddler today?”

“Explain lightening.”

Lightning begins when particles of ice collide with each other inside of thunderclouds. These collisions build to fill the cloud with electrical charge. Positively charged particles rise to the top of the cloud, as they are lighter, and negatively charged particles which are heavier sink to the bottom of the cloud."

“It’s the sound of clouds bumping together, like sky drums.”

“I need help writing a kind message to cancel plans.”

"I'm not quite sure how to help you with that."

“Here’s a kind, guilt-free message you could send.”

It’s not just about data. It’s about depth.

Why This Matters for Moms

Moms need tools that help us communicate, regulate, organize, and respond in the moment, and in the mess.

LLMs are built for that.

They’re not just smart. They’re flexible, thoughtful, and surprisingly human in how they help.

So whether you’re using ChatGPT on your phone or talking to Alexa at home what matters most is what kind of support you’re asking for.

Because the more we know about these tools, the more we can use them in ways that actually lighten our mental load.

Try This Next Time:

Ask ChatGPT (or your smart assistant if it’s LLM-powered):

  • “Explain jealousy to a 5-year-old.”

  • “Give me 3 gentle ways to say no to more TV.”

  • “Help me create a bedtime routine with soft, positive language.”

Then watch what happens to your mindset, your words, your child’s response.

This is the kind of help moms deserve.
